Q: What do you think is the strongest design trend these days?

A: There are current color trends and style trends that are featured throughout our model home interiors. But, no matter what the size of the budget or scope of a project, we believe that it’s really important to offer people opportunities to personalize their living spaces. We see personalization as the most powerful trend of all.

Q: What does personalization mean when it comes to interior design?

A: PDI is fascinated with the Millennials, people who were born between 1992 and 2002. They absolutely don’t want to look like their neighbor next door, but may not have a high-end budget. One way for them to personalize their kitchens and baths without spending a fortune, is to mix finishes on cabinets and countertops. There are also lots of great new laminates in a variety of finishes. Materials like these are very affordable and have a modern look that Millennials respond to. This generation also loves mixing design elements like industrial and vintage.

Q: In terms of interior design, what do you think builders could offer buyers that they currently aren’t focusing on?

A: Something builders haven’t really jumped on yet is the more ergonomic or European-style cabinetry. You can see examples of this cabinet trend at places like Ikea. We attended PCBC recently and there were several vendors on the exhibit floor who displayed this type of updated cabinet styling. There are exceptions of course, but most builders seem to be permanently stuck in the “raised/recessed panel, three finishes” vernacular.

Q: Looking to the future, what do you see on the horizon for interior design?

A: For PDI, it comes back to the Millennials. Their sheer numbers – larger than the Baby Boomer generation – will reshape the housing market for decades to come. One of the most striking statistics we have read is that the estimated spending by Millennials amounts to $1.3 trillion per year over the next 15 years! As designers, we are paying attention to this growing marketplace by focusing on environments that showcase their individuality and point of view.
