Quick! How many walls are there in a room? If you said “four,” you may be missing out on one of the most creative ways to make a space unique — decorating the ceiling!

Ceiling treatments are so popular with designers today that they are sometimes referred to as a room’s “fifth wall.” Painting or adding a design element to a ceiling adds loads of personal pizzazz to a space and, best of all, it can be a budget-friendly change.

Here are a few ceiling decorating ideas to consider.

In small spaces, painting the ceiling white or the same color as the walls (or one shade lighter) can make the room feel larger.

On ceilings with crown or other molding, think about adding a neutral or pale color on the ceiling to make your molding pop.

Painting an accent color on the ceiling can be a great addition if your furnishings and/or walls are otherwise neutral in tone. The contrast draws the eye upward and adds style to the room. Hint: If you decide to make your ceiling color a focal point, don’t forget to add a pop of the same color in accessories or pillows to pull everything together.

Switching out a boring or cheap overhead light fixture can be a real eye-catching addition to a dining area or bedroom ceiling. Stylish and inexpensive chandeliers and other ceiling fixtures are readily available at retailers such as IKEA. They also make fun projects for handy DIYers.

If budget isn’t an issue, there’s no end to the creative ways in which ceiling treatments can add style, elegance and interest to a room. From simple tongue-and-groove planking to elaborate honeycomb molding or classic beams and coffers, the sky’s the limit!
