Wouldn’t you just love to come home to this great room? We would, too! Located within the Festino Plan at Copper Sky, a new, upscale community near Scottsdale, Arizona, this space’s vibe echoes the open and striking Sonoran Desert.

When creating the interior of this room, our designer Miori Nakamura highlighted its size and open flow with chic décor that interprets the world out-of-doors through a contemporary lens. To do this, she began with neutrals inspired by the sand and rock, then punctuated her palette with deep ebony reflecting the desert’s cooler shadows.

Framing the room is a square tray ceiling finished with understated molding. This crisp geometry reflects throughout all the elements of the room. Graphic pocket rod curtains frame the windows, a contemporary sofa and arm chairs are scattered with geometric print throw pillows, and sculptural figurines add depth – not unlike the cacti whose silhouettes stand bold in the night sky just outside! Adding warmth to all that modern elegance is a welcoming shag area rug, deeply cushioned sofa and armchairs, a sleek gas fireplace and potted orchids.

Though it may seem achieving this look would involve moving to Copper Sky, that’s not the case! You can develop the same aesthetic in your great room by incorporating some of the interior elements curated by Miori.

Anchoring the space with texture and color, an area rug is always a great place to start. Similar in every way to the one featured in the Festino Plan, the Sina Parchment Rug evokes sun-warmed desert sand. The use of dark wood against paler elements helps build this room’s visual drama, with the coffee table making the boldest statement. Similar in style to the one Miori selected, the Nam Allw Coffee Table, has a slightly smaller footprint and would work well as a pair tucked side-by-side. Break up the dark finish of the coffee table with a decorative accent or two. Miori envisions this silver finished tray with a white marble inlay styled with stacked books, a candle, and flowers.

Welcoming seating is another key element of Miori’s room. Upholstered in a soothing oatmeal linen hue, the curving lines and thick cushions on Volo Design’s Cooper Sofa invite you to sit without losing its contemporary edge. Mirroring the sweeping silhouette of her accent chair choice, Sunpan’s Massimo Club Chair is super stylish and made for relaxing. What really makes everything pop in the pictured space are the throw pillows. Bring in a few, complementary patterns to add depth of texture. Miori was drawn to these Navajo-rug inspired pillows, whose pattern bounces handsomely off this geometric print throw pillow. She’d layer in these modern checked pillows and faux fur pillows in gray to pick up the space’s other elements.

Every comfortable living room needs lots of places to put down cocktails, books or hors d’oeuvres plates. Though we’ve got the coffee table covered, this lounge would appear unfinished if it weren’t for its end tables. A nesting table set always comes in handy, and Miori’s pick brings in a dash of metallic, which will play off the decorative star sculptures placed in the room. Side tables with smaller footprints and larger surface area function beautifully and break up seating, helping to create a sense of airiness. Mix it up with both a round-top end table and glass-surfaced rectangular table to add another layer of visual interest, then bring them to life with family photos framed in silver. We love the texture of these cement picture frames placed in a contemporary great room.
